Pierre Schaeffer has been credited with being the first to formally identify, document, and promote the use of common sounds for new forms of art. What became the foundation for Musique Concrète, Acousmatic, and other forms of recorded medium sound art. Still in use today, most of the techniques Schaeffer identified including playback speed, sampling, looping, pitch transposition, stretching, and editing were all focused on discovering what he referred to as the “in-itself-ness of the sound”.
