NOTES ON INDIVIDUAL TRACKS: (1) The sumptuous counterpoint of Bach's music, most especially "The Art of Fugue", was an oblique yet potent inspiration for this track. (2) The title alludes to Nurse with Wound's album "Alas the Madonna Does Not Function". Also, both an ailing Medusa, and many lines of Plath's hyper-intense poetry, circled in my mind while making this track. (3) Xenakis' "Persepolis" is such a watershed moment, to which I here offer meagre homage. (4) Seagulls and Stockhausen inspired this one. (5) Here I have tried to sonify existential vacuum. (6) This concerns an ever-present and much appreciated Muse. (7) The title translates a line from Sappho which inspired these sounds. (8) The title is taken from, and the sounds inspired by, Freud's summary of Stoker's "Dracula". The working title for this track, "Song of the Harpies", expresses a similar sentiment. (9) Unlike all other pieces on this release, this track was recorded in one take, with no modifications. (10) This was recorded on my forty-fifth birthday, and is dedicated to Jane Veronica Micallef.
I love making music, and have been doing so for three decades. The expressive themes that interest me all relate to human freedom in a post-modern world: alienation, psychological repression, the existential vacuum, obsession, rage, absurdity, mourning, regret, neurosis, depression, death and the concept of self. These themes may be bleak, yet all sounds are intended to be ultimately uplifting affirmations of human vitality and spirit. Influences range from old-school industrial to musique concrete and contemporary classical, from kosmische musik to minimalism and dada, from power electronics to any form of genuinely experimental music. While absorbing and acknowledging these influences, it is important to me to find and evolve my own sound. Besides making my own music, my major interests are theoretical physics, literature, psychology and gardening. I live and work in West Footscray, Victoria, Australia.
